Why is effective communication important for me?
Why is effective communication important? To me I think that effective communication skills is important because I see it as a life skill and everyone should be able to communicate effective regardless of your field of studies, your occupation, your appointment, etc. Having effective communication skills means that you are able to convey your message to your audience clearly, concisely and efficiently without creating misunderstanding. And since communication is a two way thing, you also need to be able to listen, decode and understand what the other person at the other end is trying to tell you. There are many forms of communications such as speech, non-verbal, email, text, writings and a lot of skills, effort and practice is required to be able to be proficient in these various forms of communication.
The inability to communicate effectively can be disastrous at times. Not being able communicate your message clearly to your audience can cause misunderstanding and sometimes even lead conflicts. Sometimes simple things such as using the wrong tone or the wrong forms of communication can cause your audience to misinterpret your intention and often, these minor mistakes will lead to much more undesirable complications.
Being able to communicate effectively will also add value to a person. Effective communication is one of the few skills that employer are looking for when they are conducting an interview for a job position. The ability to communicate effectively will give you the edge or even outperform someone that has better qualification than you when you are at an interview. Lack of communication in a working environment will lead to the lack of information, misunderstanding, decrease in productivity of employees, tension and conflicts between employees which is undesirable. Therefore, being able to communicate effectively is an important skill in life that everyone of us need to have and with effective communication, I believe that most of our misunderstanding and conflicts in our everyday life will be minimised.

On the whole, your blog is very interesting. It gives me clear image of communication. The blog also encourages me to focus more on communication as its advantages are heavily emphasized.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, I am glad that we share the same point of view. In my opinion, ineffective communication could result in misunderstanding which, in the end, may provoke conflict within communicators. My friend and I was once irritated at each other because of our ambiguous message. (You can read from my blog post. ;) <-- here is an advertisement. lol)
Hi Wei Song,
ReplyDeleteThat was an insightful post on effective communication. Both the advantages of effective communication and the potential problems of not acquiring it were well elaborated.
Here is a suggestion that I have to further improve on your blog post. I realized that conflicts, tensions and misunderstandings were mentioned a few times throughout your post as the problems that could result from the lack of effective communication. Perhaps you might want to cover a broader range of problems, for instance, strained relationships and career stagnation to add more dimensions to the argument.
Just my two cents worth of opinion =)
Hi Wei Song,
ReplyDeleteThank you for highlighting how you feel about effective communication. It is interesting to know that you think that communication skills are important irrespective of the field of study or occupation. Referring communication as a 'life long skill' , tells me about your feeling towards communication and what it means to you.
I think Jestina has some useful advice for you here. I also felt that the words, conflicts, misunderstandings and tensions were used a few times and could have been replaced with different ideas. Overall It was interesting to read your notions about communication.
You can consider including these changes:
1. To me I think that effective communication skills is important because I see it as a life skill and everyone should be able to communicate effective regardless of your field of studies, your occupation, your appointment, etc.

The ability to communicate effectively can give you an edge over your competitor. In a job interview, it can even help you outperform someone with better qualifications.
Enjoyed Reading it. Looking forward to Post #2.
Thanks
Thank you for the effort with this first post. You've provided lots of general info about the value of comm skills. I appreciate the way you've delivered an almost textbook-like explanation, except that for this assignment there was the supposed to be a focus on comm skills for you, up close and personal. I don't see this discussion even turning directly on you.
There are also quite a few language problems that the other readers have pointed out. Take note of those and the adjustments I make below (one in contrast to Aditi's).
1) There are many forms of communications such as speech, non-verbal, email, text, writings and a lot of skills, effort and practice is required to be able to be proficient in these various forms of communication. >>>

And since communication is a two way thing (isn't this quite linear?), you also need to be able to listen, decode and understand what the other person is trying to tell you.
How would you rewrite this if I asked you to do so without using the pronoun 'you"? I ask this because often in more formal writing it is better not to address the reader. How would this psot sound in that case?
I appreciate your hard work!
